SINGAPORE – Three Singaporean men accused of committing crimes related to obtaining personal data from Singtel and StarHub clients appeared in district court on Wednesday (December 16).
Two of them, Foo Cheek Ann Kelvin, 32, and Zhang Jiazheng, 38, are said to have used computers at their workplaces to illegally access Singtel and StarHub subscriber databases, respectively.
The third man, 33-year-old Lim Zong Xian Philbert, faces three counts of bribing another man, 37-year-old Lee Cheng Yan, with a total of $ 1,000 to obtain the details of the telecommunications companies’ customers in 2017. .
Foo faces 15 charges under the Cybersecurity and Computer Misuse Act, including allegedly obtaining information related to the address of Lee’s ex-girlfriend in 2014.
He faces an additional charge of allegedly accepting $ 180 from Lee in 2016 in exchange for retrieving sensitive details of Singtel’s clients.
Zhang faces nine charges of allegedly using a computer at his workplace to obtain information related to the details of various StarHub subscribers between 2015 and 2017.
Lee was charged in 2018 with various crimes and his case is pending.
Lim, Zhang and Foo are scheduled to appear in court on January 13 next year.
Following Zhang’s hearing on Wednesday, StarHub said it takes data security and privacy very seriously.
The company revoked Zhang’s access to its system and suspended it when the case first surfaced three years ago. He was fired in 2017 after his investigations found he violated the employee code of conduct.
“We also strengthened our systems and processes and conducted additional training for staff on data protection to further protect StarHub information. As the matter is now before the courts, it is inappropriate for us to comment on the ongoing legal proceedings, “added StarHub.
Those convicted of using a computer to secure unauthorized data access can be jailed for up to two years, fined up to $ 5,000, or both. Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to three years, fined up to $ 10,000, or both.
For each crime of corruption, offenders can be jailed for up to five years or fined up to $ 100,000, or both.
