SINGAPORE – A Singapore Polytechnic (SP) student was sentenced on Monday (December 14) to 21 months of probation after taking videos under the skirts of more than 30 women while working part-time in a University store. Singapore National.
As part of his probation, the offender, who is now 18 years old, is required to stay indoors between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. each day and perform 60 hours of community service.
You are also prohibited from using mobile phones or any other electronic device with a camera function. His mother and maternal grandmother received a $ 5,000 bond to ensure his good behavior.
The teenager cannot be identified because he was 17 years old when he committed the crimes. The Children and Youth Act now covers those under 18 years of age.
He pleaded guilty in district court on October 29 to two counts of insulting a woman’s modesty. During the sentencing, two other charges for similar crimes were considered.
Assistant District Attorney Darren Sim had previously said that one of the victims entered the store on August 31 of last year.
She was bending down to check out some items when the teen crawled up behind her and used her cell phone to record a video of her up her skirt.
The woman was at a counter to make her payment when the teenager told her he needed to run a price check. He then squatted behind her and recorded a second upskirt video.
The DPP told the court: “While the defendant was recording the second video, his mobile phone came into contact with the victim’s right leg.
“The victim immediately turned and saw the defendant behind her … The defendant stood up and the victim asked him if he had taken a picture of her under her skirt.”
The court heard that the woman asked to see the photo gallery on the device after the teenager denied committing the crime.
“The defendant agreed that the videos he had taken were hidden in a secure folder that was password protected,” DPP Sim said.
The woman looked through the mobile phone but couldn’t find any incriminating images. Despite this, he filed a police report on September 2 of last year.
Officers conducting an investigation saw closed-circuit television footage of the store, showing the teenager committing the crimes. They arrested him and confiscated his mobile phone.
A forensic examination of the device revealed photo collages of 31 different female victims. In total, the teenager took 40 videos of these women in the store between the end of May and September 1 of last year.
In a previous statement, SP said that it “takes a firm position” against sexual misconduct and expects all members of its community “to behave in accordance with the law at all times.”
His spokesperson added: “We will not hesitate to impose disciplinary measures against any member of our community who violates our code of conduct.”
For each count of insulting a woman’s modesty, an offender can be jailed for up to one year and fined.
