Harry Kane scored his ninth Premier League goal of the season, but Jeffrey Schlupp’s draw and some superb saves by Vicente Guaita left Tottenham frustrated in a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Kane scored in the 23rd minute with a low long-range shot that fooled Guaita as Tottenham started confidently in the drizzle at Selhurst Park.
But Palace responded impressively to dominate after the break and Schlupp grabbed a well deserved leveler from close range in the 81st minute.
Ben Davies hit the crossbar and Guaita made impressive saves from Kane and Eric Dier as Tottenham came back to life late, but had to settle for a point.
Tottenham, leading the league after 11 games for the first time since 1984, went to 25 points from 12 games, one ahead of second-placed Liverpool, who can overtake them with a win in Fulham on Sunday.
Palace is 11th with 17 points.
“I have experience with football and the Premier League, and I told the players what could happen, and it happened,” Tottenham manager José Mourinho said.
“I never agree on a point. Every game we are going to win, and if sometimes we don’t win it to the opponent’s credit, and other times it’s because we should do better. Today I think it was a bit of both.”
The impressive march of Mourinho’s team to the top of the table has been built, lately, on defensive solidity and lethal counterattack, but on Sunday they started with the front foot.
Guaita made great saves to avoid a shot from Tanguy Ndombele and a header from Kane, but was left red-faced when Kane received a pass from Son Heung-Min in the 23rd minute and slipped on a low right-foot shot that he veered off and slid off the grass. and went through the guardian.
The closest Palace tied before the break was just before the break, when a right-footed curling iron from Eberechi Eze beat Hugo Lloris but hit the outside of the post.
Tottenham’s attacking threat lessened after the break when Palace, buoyed by the return of 2,000 fans for the first time since March, prevailed.
Schlupp seized a good chance over the bar, and Christian Benteke should have done better with a header.
But Palace got its reward when Lloris failed to take care of Eze’s wicked delivery of a free kick, and when the ball reached Schupp, he fired it.
Tottenham did their best for the late victory, but Guaita was inspired by the goal. He first stayed clear of Kane’s header from Serge Aurier’s center, then flew through the air to get past Dier’s free kick.
