Shaw makes surprising admission about Man Utd’s pre-derby concern

Luke Shaw admitted that Manchester United were aware that they could have found themselves four goals behind in half an hour against Manchester City.

In the end, the Manchester derby was far less entertaining than a high-scoring match would have been. Instead of there being four goals for a single team, there were only four shots on goal overall.

Neither side could make them count that is, the derby ended scoreless.

Nonetheless, it was a small step in the right direction for United, who are looking to respond the other way around being eliminated from the Champions League. And Shaw believes the tie was a deserved result.

He said Sky sports: “I would say it was very tight, a very close match and we made it difficult for them at times. They couldn’t keep up with them and we defended well.

“Either team could have taken it in the end, two very good teams and we went ahead with one point.

“We missed the final ball in the first half, Bruno Fernandes does it magnificently, but we missed it and we could have won the game.

“We have started slowly the last three or four games, we said we needed to start off brilliantly and if we didn’t we could be 3-0, 4-0 less for 30 minutes.

“One point is better than none, maybe we could have taken it towards the end. Tonight we show a little more about ourselves, but we know we have to improve to fight at the top ”.

Solskjaer makes claims about performance

One man who was quite happy with United’s performance was manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who claimed it was the best his team had played against their rivals since he was in charge.

“It was a close match,” he said after the draw.

“I know we beat them a few times last season, but they were different games. They had some great moments.

“They are two good teams. Tactically we knew they were going to give us some problems, but defensively we were excellent ”.
