SINGAPORE – Fifty-three people were indicted in court on Wednesday (December 9) for violating safe distancing measures, police said Thursday.

The 34 men and 19 women, ages 20 to 75, were charged under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act.

The largest gathering involved 26 people accused of playing inside a unit on Geylang Road during an anti-crime operation by police on December 1.

All of them were accused of violating Covid-19 regulations, as well as crimes under the Common Gambling Houses Law.

The second group defendants participated in a 14-person social gathering at a residential unit on Bedok Reservoir Road on June 6.

The five occupants of the unit were charged with the crime of allowing the entry of more than five visitors to their home.

The nine visitors face a charge of participating in a social gathering larger than the allowed group size, and seven of them are also charged for a charge of leaving their place of residence for a social gathering.

A third incident, on June 16, involved 13 people having a birthday celebration in an office unit on Buroh Street. The police had been alerted about the group gathered inside the office.

On Thursday, police warned they severely viewed irresponsible behavior and failure to adhere to safe distancing measures.

“The authorities will not hesitate to take action against anyone who does not comply with safe distancing measures or shows blatant disregard for our laws,” he added.
