5 things to know before visiting bars under the COVID-19 nightlife pilot

SINGAPORE: Three bars will be allowed to reopen for two months starting Tuesday (December 8) under a small-scale pilot program for the nightlife industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They are Bar Kiharu at Orchard Plaza, Bell Bar at Cuppage Plaza, and Skinny’s Lounge at Boat Quay.

These outlets must comply with the COVID-19 safe management measures established for the nightlife industry at all times, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MTI) and the Ministry of the Interior (MHA) said in a joint statement.

Enforcement agencies will monitor these outlets and their customers, and enforcement actions will be taken if any of these guidelines are violated, authorities added.

This is what you need to know before you go:

1. DO NOT MIX, MIX BETWEEN GROUPS

Those who go together to a pub or bar can only do so in a group of no more than five people. Groups should also make sure they are 1 meter apart, including tables and seats.

Refrain from being friendly: the different groups are forbidden to mix or mingle, and there should be no change of group members either.

2. KEEP YOUR MASKS

Face masks should be worn at all times, unless eating and drinking. Customers are reminded to put the masks back on immediately after dinner. Nor should there be any sale, service or consumption of liquor within the point of sale after 10:30 pm.

3. NO LIVE MUSIC, DANCE OR KARAOKE

Keep those dance shoes at home for now; public entertainment activities such as dancing, darts, billiards, billiards or karaoke are not yet allowed in bars and pubs. There will also be no live music, radio broadcasts, or television and video projections. Only recorded music is allowed and should not be higher than 60 decibels.

4. NO ACCOMMODATION, PROLONGED INTERACTIONS WITH STAFF MEMBERS

In order to reduce social interaction, bar and bar visitors or workers should not provide or tolerate hostess services. These include providing companionship to customers through drinking or conversation.

Interactions between staff members and customers should also not be longer than “normally necessary” when performing services such as serving food and beverages or accepting payments.

5. SMILE – YOU WILL BE IN THE CAMERA

The pubs and bars participating in this pilot must have closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras deployed and activated at all times. Recordings must be stored for at least 28 days and a sign stating that the facility is under surveillance should be posted in a prominent location.

Be sure to bring your TraceTogether token with you or install the app on your mobile phone, as these nightspots must implement SafeEntry from TraceTogether only.

Customers are also “strongly advised” not to visit more than one nightlife establishment per night, in light of the public health considerations associated with COVID-19.
