The national water agency PUB is investigating an incident in which a boy was seen fishing illegally at Marina Reservoir.
The incident was videotaped and uploaded to TikTok on November 28.
The video has since been removed from the social media platform, but not before drawing the attention of netizens, many of whom disapproved of the boy’s actions.
In the video, a boy in a black shirt and red shorts can be seen doing a tug-of-war with his fishing pole as he struggles to pull it towards him.
In the second part of the video, viewers gather to see how the boy tries to roll the line, with the help of his friend.
A man in a black suit, who appears to be a security personnel, can be seen standing near the boy and talking to someone through a communication device.
He does not seem to approach or speak to the child.
After the video made its rounds on social media, netizens shared their disapproval upon seeing the boy’s actions.
On the other hand, other netizens saw no cause for concern.
In response to a query from Stomp, a PUB spokesperson said: “We are aware of this incident and are investigating, as the location in the TikTok video is not a designated fishing spot at Marina Reservoir.”
PUB is also asking members of the public who have witnessed the incident and / or know the identity of the person involved to contact PUB immediately at 1800-2255-782.
“We urge fishermen to be considerate and practice responsible fishing,” added the PUB spokesperson.
“Fishing in non-designated areas is dangerous and can present safety risks to other pedestrians and reservoir users, especially in places like the Boardwalk that are heavily frequented.
“There have been incidents in the past where pedestrians were injured by loose hooks thrown by fishermen.
“PUB has a serious opinion against illegal fishing activities. We have stepped up patrols to deter illegal fishing activities.”
Violators caught fishing in areas where fishing is not possible and / or using live bait in reservoirs can be fined up to $ 3,000. Fishing is only allowed in designated fishing areas (www.go.gov.sg/fish-responsibly) in reservoirs and waterways.
PUB has also shared a post on Facebook to remind the public to practice responsible fishing in reservoirs and waterways.
