SINGAPORE – A week-long trawl to crack down on criminal activities in Geylang saw 89 people arrested for various crimes, police said in a statement on Sunday (December 6).

Among those arrested were 62 men and 27 women, the youngest being 16 years old and the oldest 94.

The teenager was arrested for crimes under the Foreign Labor Employment Act, while the 94-year-old woman is being investigated for crimes under the Common Gambling Houses Act.

Others were arrested for crimes ranging from the sale of illicit drugs to non-compliance with Covid-19 regulations.

For six days, from Tuesday to Sunday, agents from the Bedok Police Division ran a multi-agency operation in Geylang, with agents from various agencies combing the streets and monitoring massage and entertainment outlets, among other locations.

During the raids, 20 men, between 23 and 55 years old, were arrested for selling illicit medicines, drug-related crimes and belonging to a secret society.

Among this group, four men, ages 25 to 39, are being investigated for crimes under the Health Products Act, using cough syrups, various brands of sexual enhancement, and other pills with a street value of more than $ 13,800 seized.

The police also denounced illegal gambling activities, investigating 12 men and 15 women, between 21 and 94 years old, for crimes contemplated in the Law of common gambling houses.

Cash for more than $ 69,500 and gambling related paraphernalia were seized.

At a massage parlor, a 40-year-old woman was arrested for a crime under the Women’s Charter. The establishment was found to be operating without a valid license.

Police also found public entertainment venues operating illegally under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) Act of 2020. They arrested 24 men and 10 women who are being investigated for violating the public entertainment license and the conditions of the liquor license. , as well as for operating during the prohibition and the breach of the safe distancing measures.

As part of the expansion of entertainment venues, a man and five women, aged 16 to 42, were also arrested for crimes under the Employment of Foreign Labor Law.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old man was arrested for crimes contemplated in the Customs Law, and five cartons and eight packages of cigarettes were seized without paying. The amount of duties and taxes on goods and services evaded amounted to $ 540 in total.

Four other men and one woman, aged 44 to 64, were involved in the illegal sale and received citations under the Environmental Public Health Act for selling in a public place without a valid license from the Singapore Food Agency.

They sold second-hand items, such as clothing and shoes.

Police said investigations against all those arrested are ongoing.

The commander of the Geylang Neighborhood Police Center, Deputy Superintendent of Police Lee Ting Wei, said in a press release: “This operation is part of an effort by various agencies to suppress criminal activity in Geylang. The other agencies involved in the joint effort included the Department of Criminal Investigation, the Central Bureau of Narcotics, the Health Sciences Authority, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority, the Land Transport Authority, Singapore Customs and the Singapore Food Agency.
