94 years among the almost 90 people arrested in a crime operation in Geylang

SINGAPORE: A 94-year-old man was among nearly 90 people arrested for various crimes in a multi-agency operation this week to suppress criminal activities in Geylang, police said in a press release on Sunday (December 6).

A total of 62 men and 27 women are under investigation after the December 1-6 operation, the Singapore Police (SPF) said.

They include 20 men who were investigated for crimes such as the alleged sale of illicit drugs, alleged drug-related crimes and being a member of a secret society.

Among them, four men are being investigated for crimes under the Sanitary Products Law.

“Cough syrups and a variety of sexual enhancement brands and other illegal pills with a street value of more than S $ 13,800 were seized,” police said.

Additionally, a 94-year-old man was among 28 people investigated as part of law enforcement efforts against illegal gambling. More than S $ 69,500 of cash and gambling paraphernalia were seized in the operation, police said.

A 40-year-old woman was also arrested for crimes under the Women’s Charter, after a massage parlor was discovered to be operating without a valid license.

Police also conducted an operation targeting public entertainment venues operating illegally amid COVID-19 restrictions.

Thirty-four people were investigated for crimes such as violating COVID-19 regulations by operating public entertainment venues while they were prohibited and failing to comply with safe distance measures, as well as failure to comply with the public entertainment license and conditions of the liquor license.

“In this particular operation, a man and five women, aged 16 to 42, were arrested for crimes under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act,” police added.

In another case involving unpaid cigarettes, a 42-year-old man was arrested and five boxes and eight packs of cigarettes were seized. The amount evaded was S $ 500 in customs duties and S $ 40 in goods and services taxes (GST), police said.

In an anti-illegal sale operation, five people were cited for selling second-hand goods, such as clothing and shoes, in a public place without a valid license from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).

Investigations against all the suspects are ongoing, police said.

“This operation is part of a multi-agency effort to crack down on criminal activities in Geylang,” said Geylang Neighborhood Police Center commander and Deputy Superintendent of Police Lee Ting Wei.

“I am grateful for the continued support of the various enforcement agencies, who will go a long way in keeping Geylang safe and orderly.”

The police operation, led by the Bedok Police Division, had the support of agents from the Criminal Investigation Department, the Central Narcotics Office, the Health Sciences Authority, the Immigration and Control Post Authority, the Authority Land Transport, Singapore Customs and SFA.
