SINGAPORE – Police have warned the public about a new variant of phishing scams that involve fake bank advertisements in mobile phone promotions.

The fake ads claim that banks are working with telecommunications companies to offer mobile phone promotions, police said in a statement on Friday (December 4).

These ads have been seen on the social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, and on the Carousell online marketplace.

Police said that when victims click on embedded links in the fake ads, they will be directed to a fake banking website where they will be asked to provide their Internet banking access details and one-time passwords (OTP). .

Victims often realize that they have been scammed only after discovering unauthorized transactions on their bank accounts.

Police said scammers can also modify such sites from time to time to target customers from different banks and e-commerce platforms.

The public is advised to beware of links provided in unsolicited advertisements and text messages, “especially those related to offers that seem too good to be true,” police said.

They should also verify the authenticity of the information with official websites and sources, and never reveal their personal or internet banking details or OTPs to anyone.

Those who notice fraudulent transactions involving their bank accounts or credit and debit cards should cancel their cards immediately.
