US in talks with Huawei’s CFO Meng on disposing of criminal charges: source

WASHINGTON: The US Department of Justice is discussing a deal with Huawei’s CFO Meng Wanzhou that would allow it to return to China from Canada, in exchange for admitting wrongdoing, a person familiar with the matter said.

Meng’s attorneys have spoken with Justice Department officials in recent weeks about the possibility of reaching a “deferred prosecution agreement,” the source said, confirming an earlier report in the Wall Street Journal.

Under such a deal, Meng would have to admit to some of the allegations against him, but prosecutors would agree to postpone and then drop the charges if he cooperated.

Meng, 48, was arrested in December 2018 on a warrant from the United States. She faces charges of bank fraud for allegedly misleading HSBC Holdings Plc about Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s business in Iran, causing the bank to breach US sanctions.

Justice Department spokesman Marc Raimondi declined to comment. Huawei did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.
