One diner was horrified when what felt like crunchy cabbage in his mouth turned out to be a baby cockroach.

Stomper Anonymous said he visited the Food Republic at Causeway Point last Thursday (Nov 26), around 1 p.m.

He placed a take-out order of chicken rice with soy sauce from You Men Hong Kong Roast, a stall he’s been frequenting “for months.”

The Stomper recounted: “When I was on my second bite, I noticed a strange texture in my mouth that felt like cabbage.

“Since I’ve eaten from them before, I know they don’t add cabbage to their chicken rice.

“I decided to take a look and, to my horror, it was a baby cockroach.

“I had chewed on a baby cockroach.

“I went back to the stall and showed them the evidence. The older uncle did a closer inspection and proceeded to wash the cockroach spoon near the pot where the noodles are boiling.”

According to Anonymous, no apology was offered and he had to request a refund.

In response to an inquiry from Stomp, a Food Republic spokesperson said he was informed of the incident via a customer email on November 28.

“We contacted her immediately to apologize and see if she was okay,” he added.

“There has been a complete disinfection and sanitation of this and all other posts. Ongoing efforts to control pests have also been intensified.

“We have also issued a strict warning to the owner and staff of the booth, and we strongly reiterate the importance of food safety and hygiene to all tenants and staff.

“We will continue to work closely with our tenants to ensure that we adhere to the strict food safety and hygiene standards that have been established, to continue to allow our customers to dine with peace of mind.”
