SINGAPORE: A funeral director is accused of causing the death of her ex-boyfriend in a multi-story parking lot in May.
Alverna Cher Sheue Pin, 38, was charged Thursday (December 3) with one count of manslaughter that does not amount to murder.
The founder of City Funeral Singapore is accused of carrying out an act, not specified in court documents, that caused the death of 32-year-old Wee Jun Xiang between 1:44 PM and 5:15 PM on 16 May.
She intended to cause his death on Deck 4B of the multi-story parking lot at Block 145A Bedok Reservoir Road, the charge sheet read.
Police said in an earlier statement that they were alerted to a case of unnatural death on Bedok Reservoir Road at 5.30pm that day.
Mr. Wee was pronounced dead at the scene and his ex-girlfriend Cher was arrested for her alleged role in his death after follow-up investigations.
Cher appeared in court via video link to receive her charge, dressed in black. She asked to make three phone calls to her family and friends to pass money on to her family and for a friend to help her hire a lawyer.
“I’m a single mother and the sole breadwinner in the family, so I really need to pass money on to my parents,” Cher said, adding that her mother is a stroke patient.
The police prosecutor opposed the request, citing ongoing investigations. He asked that Cher remain in pre-trial detention for a week as she is involved in a capital charge and a raid must be carried out and the exhibits recovered.
Cher tried to get the judge to grant her request, saying she had two children, ages six and 13, and that she needed to pass money on to her family because they have no income.
The judge said the investigating officer can help with her request and ordered that Cher be transferred as requested by the prosecution.
He will return to court on December 10.
According to Cher’s Facebook profile, she is the “boss” of the local funeral service company City Funeral Singapore, and founder of the CARE planner certification program, which offers services like will writing and “last trip planning.”
Cher has given various media interviews about her role as a funeral director and has assisted at the funeral of actor Aloysius Pang.
If convicted of wrongful death that does not amount to murder, Cher could face life in prison or be sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined. She cannot be spanked because she is a woman.
