Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen says Fred would never play for the club again if it were up to him.

The Brazilian midfielder escaped a red card in the first half of United’s 3-1 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford on Wednesday when he poked his head in the direction of visiting midfielder Leandro Paredes.

Fred was booked for that incident but was later sent off for a second yellow infraction for a challenge to Ander Herrera in the second half.

Owen was very critical of Fred’s actions and said that his petulance would have consequences if it were up to him.

“Errors in general,” Owen said on BT Sport when asked about the incident and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s decision not to take Fred out at halftime after being booked.

Fred was not fired after the header.

“It was a red card. There wasn’t much [in the headbutt] but come on, you’re a grown man. You don’t have to do these smug little things to put your team at risk.

“If I were a coach and one of my players did this, just out of petulance, then he wouldn’t play for me again. It’s really pathetic.”

Solskjaer spoke about the first incident and the eventual red card after the match.

“Fred shouldn’t put his head towards him [Paredes],” he said.

Owen said Fred’s actions were “pathetic”

“I don’t think he touched it. He was a bit lucky to stay.”

On his decision not to replace him, he added: “Yes … but Fred has played very well.

“We talked about staying calm and standing.

“The second yellow card was by no means a foul. Ander [Herrera] Know that. He definitely knows. “
