Marina Bay will be illuminated by a different kind of light show for the New Year, Singapore news and the best stories

SINGAPORE – In lieu of brilliant fireworks, this year’s year-end celebrations in Marina Bay will feature 60 moving beams of light.

The bay will be illuminated every night in December with the circular formation of 60 lights that will produce the beams for the show.

The circle is approximately 38 m in diameter.

However, every 15 minutes, the lights will do a “performance” for three minutes.

Titled “Shine a Light,” the show will run daily from 8 pm to 10:30 pm, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said on Tuesday (Dec. 1).

The light show and display is a Covid-19 safety move to minimize the crowds that typically congregate in Marina Bay each year for the New Year’s Eve countdown celebration.

But at the same time, it represents a new beginning for the country after a difficult year, said URA director of places management Jason Chen.

“Shine a Light is designed to symbolize unity, positivity and resilience.

“Through the collective projection of rays of light into the sky, Shine a Light stands for a guiding beacon propping up the spirit of Singaporeans to overcome the challenges arising from the pandemic and the determination to emerge stronger in the new year as nation, “he added.

The lights will remain on but static during idle hours.

The URA advises visitors to the light show to adhere to safe management measures and avoid the area if it appears to be crowded and return later.

While the current Covid-19 pandemic has doused the flames of countdown joy in Marina Bay, the URA has previously said that fireworks will light up the skies of the heart in different locations in Singapore.

The locations have yet to be announced.

Last year, an eight-minute fireworks display in the Bay Area was the highlight of Marina Bay Countdown 2020, the 15th annual event.
