SINGAPORE: Spectators will be able to return to a stadium this weekend to watch a ‘live’ match of the Singapore Premier League (SPL) between league leaders Tampines Rovers and Geylang International, announced the Singapore Football Association ( FAS) on Wednesday (December 2).

“Following discussions with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, the Ministry of Health and Sport of Singapore, a pilot test will be carried out for a game to ensure that the necessary logistics and movement protocols can be fully evaluated and carried out. out smoothly, “FAS said in a press release.

A maximum of 200 fans, 150 at home and 50 away, will be able to watch the game on Saturday (December 5) from the stadium, subject to mandatory COVID-19 testing and safe distancing protocols, the FAS added.

This is the first time that spectators will be allowed into stadiums for an SPL game since mid-March.

“The measure to allow the presence of a limited number of spectators in the stadium marks a progressive step for fans to return to participate in football matches. This has been possible thanks to the progress made by the SPL since its resumption on 17 October”. said FAS.

“The comprehensive protocols that were established, including the mandatory biweekly smear test for all players and match officials, have helped the league maintain zero positive COVID-19 cases since the restart.”

Fans wishing to attend the match will need to purchase a ticket online through the FAS website.

These fans will also need to undergo a rapid antigen test (ART) on site at Our Tampines Hub when they arrive at the game.

There will be no cost for the COVID-19 test and fans will only need to present proof of purchase of the match ticket and a corresponding form of identification.

Fans will be able to choose between predetermined times for the COVID-19 test, with the first time at 2.15 pm and the last at 4.15 pm

Fans are advised to arrive at least 15 minutes before their designated time to facilitate a smooth procedure, FAS added.

Each test is expected to take about 30 minutes to process.

“The successful outcome of this test is critical for us to explore the possibility of fans returning to all stadiums for the 2021 SPL season. While they have been able to follow the action via ‘live’ broadcasts, nothing can replace the feeling of cheering their team on in the flesh from the stands, “said FAS President Lim Kia Tong.

The Tampines Rovers currently sit at the top of the SPL chart, one point ahead of Albirex Niigata. The Stags have two games left to play this season, with a match against Lion City Sailors on Wednesday followed by the eastern derby with Geylang International on Saturday.

Gavin Lee’s team will clinch their first title since 2013 if they win both games.
