SINGAPORE – Moist weather is expected with temperatures dropping to around 22 degrees C within a few days of the first half of December, the meteorologist said on Tuesday (December 1).
The Singapore Meteorological Service (MSS) said rain is forecast on most days in the next two weeks due to prevailing monsoon conditions in the northeast. The daily temperature will mainly range from 24 degrees C to 33 degrees C, and could reach 34 degrees C in a day or two.
December is typically the wettest month of the year.
Showers are expected over parts of the island in the afternoons, but can last into the evenings.
Heavy torrential rain will spread in a few days due to convergence of winds over Singapore and the surrounding region. Stronger winds can be expected in the second week of December.
The MSS added that last month was the second coldest November in the last decade, with a monthly average temperature of 27.2 degrees Celsius.
Precipitation was also higher over most of the island, with the highest anomaly 78% above the average recorded at Paya Lebar.
Heavy rains led to flash flooding and downed trees in parts of Singapore on November 2.
The highest daily total precipitation for the month was recorded at 134.2mm at Paya Lebar on the same day, the MSS said.
Water levels in Singapore’s drains and canals prompted flood warnings at 12 locations on November 22.
The MSS said these heavy rains could be attributed to strong solar warming of land areas, as well as large-scale convergence of winds over Singapore.
While La Niña conditions may have influenced rainfall, the MSS added that other factors, such as monsoon and local wind conditions, were more significant.
There were also some warm days in November, mainly in the first half of the month.
The highest daily temperature of 34.9 degrees C was recorded in Clementi on November 5 and Paya Lebar on November 12.
