A man panicked after losing a fancy necklace that belonged to his friend, but was fortunately reunited with him thanks to the kindness of a restaurant owner.

Mr. Pei, 32, a Chinese national and a vendor, told Lianhe Wanbao that the shock of the loss made him break out in a cold sweat.

A friend had sent Pei a WeChat message last Wednesday (November 25), seeking his help in collecting a platinum necklace worth Singapore $ 20,000 from a high-end jewelry store in ION Orchard and sending it to him from return to China.

“The necklace was made by a famous French artist. My friend had sent it to the Singapore store for maintenance,” said Mr. Pei, who went to Orchard Road to pick up the accessory at 9pm that same day.

The store staff kept the necklace in a box, which was then placed in a small black bag.

Aware of the necklace’s value, Pei said that she kept the bag carefully in her hand the entire time.

He then went to a barbecue restaurant near the Aljunied MRT station to have dinner for himself and his girlfriend.

As the restaurant was full and its staff was busy, Mr. Pei paid for his order and left the restaurant to wait. He returned to collect his food when an employee informed him that it was ready.

Mr. Pei, who had some personal matters on his mind, completely forgot about the necklace.

With his bag of food in hand, he walked 200 m to the Aljunied MRT station to pick up his girlfriend. It was then that he realized that the necklace was no longer with him.

Horrified, Mr. Pei retraced his steps but saw no sign of the necklace.

He recounted: “I was feeling desperate after searching for an hour, when the steakhouse boss called me and said he had found the necklace.

“I breathed a sigh of relief and immediately returned to the restaurant to retrieve the necklace.”

Restaurant manager Dong Jingwu, 34, said he had reviewed CCTV footage of his store and conducted a search along the same route that Pei took.

After half an hour, he finally found the black bag containing the necklace in a motorcycle case, which was also black.

Mr. Pei added: “I was really anxious because the necklace is very expensive and it would take me 10 months of my salary to return it.

“Mr. Dong knew how valuable the necklace is, but he didn’t take it for himself. It’s really weird. He wanted to take him out to dinner to thank him, but he refused.”
