REUTERS: The English FA is investigating a deleted social media post by Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani that contained a phrase in Spanish that is offensive in some contexts.
The 33-year-old Uruguayan international inspired United to a 3-2 comeback in Southampton on Sunday (December 29), with two goals and one assist after coming off the bench at halftime.
Responding to a congratulatory message on Instagram, Cavani wrote a phrase in Spanish that could be offensive in some contexts. The post appeared shortly after the match and has now been removed.
Cavani could face a minimum suspension of three games if the FA believes he used discriminatory or racist language under its Rule E3.
Former Liverpool striker Luis Suárez, Cavani’s teammate in Uruguay, received an eight-game suspension for using the same word in his on-field clash with French United defender Patrice Evra in 2011.
United could not immediately be reached for comment.
Cavani has scored three league goals for the club since joining as a free agent in the summer transfer window.
