SINGAPORE: A cornerback who tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival in Singapore was due to participate in a ONE Championship event on Friday (December 4).
The 58-year-old man tested negative for COVID-19 before flying from Belarus to Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and ONE said on Monday in response to inquiries from the CNA on Sunday night.
He tested positive for COVID-19 upon arrival on November 27. The Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Sunday that the 58-year-old had arrived from Belarus with a short-term visit pass.
“As part of the strict protocols for foreign athletes and the crew participating in this event, he was placed in isolation upon arrival. After testing positive for COVID-19, he was transferred to a hospital and is currently under treatment,” he said ONE and STB.
Three other participants in the event who were on the same flight as the man on the corner are currently serving their quarantine at a dedicated facility.
The event scheduled for Friday, titled ONE: Big Bang, will continue as scheduled on December 4, STB and ONE were added.
“In accordance with ONE’s protocol and Singapore government regulations, all overseas athletes, cornerbacks and staff must be isolated until they receive a negative test result, after which they will follow a strictly controlled itinerary that has been pre-approved, “the joint statement read.
“Foreign athletes and their production team must also be tested four times, before leaving their country, upon arrival in Singapore, as well as before and after their fight.”
During a fight, a cornerback provides assistance to an MMA fighter. His duties generally include applying ice to reduce swelling and making sure the fighter is sufficiently hydrated.
2 CORNERMEN TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 IN OCTOBER
Last month, two cornerbacks who were scheduled to participate in a ONE Championship live sporting event on October 30 also tested positive for COVID-19.
Both men tested negative for the coronavirus before flying to Singapore from the United States and Russia, and also tested negative for COVID-19 upon arrival.
However, they tested positive for COVID-19 on October 27 and did not participate in the event as an additional safety measure.
The live sporting event held on October 30 was one of the first to test the use of rapid COVID-19 antigen tests and had a maximum capacity of 250 spectators.
