SINGAPORE: More than 200 public car parks in Singapore may have charging stations for electric vehicles by the third quarter of 2022.

The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the Land Transportation Authority (LTA) announced on Monday (November 30) the launch of Singapore’s pilot tender for electric vehicle charging points in public parking lots.

The tender includes the installation and operation of more than 600 charging points in more than 200 public car parks in urbanizations, industrial estates, parks and community centers.

Successful bidders will be required to install charging stations in their assigned car parks by the third quarter of 2022, LTA and URA said in a joint press release.

“The launch of the pilot tender marks an important milestone in the expansion of Singapore’s public car park charging network,” authorities said.

Singapore is increasing the installation of electric vehicle charging points, as part of plans to phase out internal combustion engine vehicles by 2040.

Earlier this year, the government announced its plan to deploy up to 28,000 recharging points in public parking lots by 2030. Two-thirds of them will be in Housing Development Board (HDB) parking lots, the Transport Minister said last month , Ong Ye Kung.

Singapore’s electric car population is around 1,190, or about 0.2 percent of the 630,018 registered cars, according to LTA figures released last month.

There are now 1,800 charging points located throughout the island, the URA and LTA said in Monday’s press release.

The data and information obtained from the tender will help shape the design and phase of future tenders, which will be issued in batches over the next several years, the URA and LTA said.

“Bringing charging points to more public parking lots across the island will provide drivers with greater convenience and accessibility, making electric vehicles a more attractive option,” said Lim Eng Hwee, CEO of URA.

LTA Executive Director Mr. Ng Lang added that the wider adoption of electric vehicles “will produce significant environmental benefits and improve livability for all Singaporeans.”

“Along with incentives such as the early EV adoption incentive and the recently improved vehicle emissions scheme, the increased availability of charging points will help encourage more vehicle owners to choose EVs,” he added.

The tender is open until March 12, 2021.
