The Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSH) and the Singapore Contractors Association (SCAL) are urgently calling on all construction companies to conduct a safety exercise after three workplace fatalities occurred in a short period of two days this week.

The deaths could have easily been avoided if proper risk assessments had been carried out and site personnel had been vigilant, clear-minded and maintained a high level of safety awareness at all times, the WSH Council and SCAL said in a notice on Friday.

“Many supervisors and workers have just returned to workplaces after a long absence due to the ‘circuit breaker’. Some complacency or safety processes may have been bypassed,” said SCAL President , Ng Yek Meng, in a separate press release.

John Ng, Chairman of the WSH Board, said conducting a safety time-out exercise will help industry stakeholders review all existing workplace safety and health processes and address any potential failures.

The exercise involves taking stock of construction activities and safety protocols. This includes checking the stability of structures and supports, ensuring equipment is in good working condition, and providing refresher training to workers.

“This will ensure that WSH’s measures are robust and appropriate, especially as it approaches the year-end holiday period, where companies are trying to meet work deadlines before the holidays start,” said Mr. Ng.

The WSH Council and SCAL noted that each accident will cause more delays and tighter deadlines for construction projects. Companies are asked to complete their safe time-out exercises as soon as possible, or at least before December 23, when the holiday season begins.

You have requested that companies indicate their hours to perform the exercises on an online form before December 11.
