Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists that Georginio Wijnaldum’s ongoing contract issue has had no impact on their relationship, but has compared the situation to that of Emre Can, who left under similar circumstances.

Holland international He’s out of contract next summer, which means he can start negotiating with foreign clubs from January 1, and talks about extending his stay at Anfield have stalled despite Klopp clearly wanting him to stay.

Wijnaldum was strongly linked with Barcelona in the last transfer window. However, there will be many other clubs interested in a player who has been a key part of Liverpool’s success for the past three years.

However, Klopp has once again made clear to the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, his feelings for Wijnaldum. And he would certainly love to be offered a great deal to stay.

He made his 201st appearance, of which only 28 were as a substitute, in just over four seasons in Wednesday’s Champions League loss to Atalanta.

“I can’t really say much about that. I’d be happy if he stayed here and I’m quite happy with Gini, as you can see when you look at most of the line-ups, ”Klopp said before the trip to Brighton.

“He always played well, that’s why he has played the number of games he has. To be honest, I don’t remember many bad games.

“He played for us in many different positions and is in a good moment thank God. Let it continue for a long time.

“I don’t know how many games he has played since I’ve been here, it’s good and there’s nothing more to say about it.

“As long as nothing is decided, everything is possible. I’m positive.”

Klopp has been here before, of course, as he faced a similar situation with mre Can in 2017-18.

The German international made 38 appearances during that campaign, but turned down the offer of a new contract and went to Juventus on a free contract in the summer.

Can rerun

Klopp’s experience in this regard means that his opinion of Wijnaldum will not change.

“No problem. We have had situations like this before, with Emre Can, for example,” he added.

“He played and gave everything until the last day of his contract and Gini will do the same, there is no doubt about that.

“It will not damage our relationship forever. Gini is one of the best people I have ever met and he is one of the best players I have coached and he is an outstanding person so no problem, no problem at all.

“We are professionals. Our relationship didn’t change at all over the years, it obviously got better.

“We have won one or two things together, we know each other better. I’m interested in his life, he’s interested in my life, that’s right, mine isn’t that spectacular really, but that’s the truth. “

Wijnaldum was also shy when asked about his future earlier this month.

Talking to dutch font Het paroolHowever, he said: “I can’t say anything about it. Ask Liverpool those questions. They do not answer?

“I cannot say anything about it, even if there is talk of a new contract between Liverpool and me or not. I’m sorry.”
