Rather than casting a shadow, netizens sympathized with an elderly woman who was said to act rude on an MRT train ride.
A member of the Facebook group Complaint Singapore recounted in a post on Tuesday (November 24) how the aunt had repeatedly placed her purse on her lap while they were sitting next to each other.
The first time the old woman placed the “Bonia bag” on her lap, she returned it. When it was done the second time, the bag was returned once more, prompting the aunt to scold the other party, demanding to know why the bag couldn’t be placed on her lap.
“So [stood up]she [stared] me from Pasir Ris to now in Bugis, ”said the Facebook user, who sought real-time advice on what to do in response to the invasion of personal space. An image was also posted showing the elderly woman sitting on an MRT train, holding a cane and her purse.
While the immediate thought might be that the aunt had a right to herself, netizens pointed out that she could very well be ill with the mental decline that comes with old age, and it would possibly require some patience and understanding. Others asked for empathy when interacting with those of the older generation.
According to a 2015 study led by the Institute of Mental Health, one in 10 people aged 60 and over in Singapore may have dementia, and the numbers are expected to rise over time.
