Taiwanese singer and television personality Ting Hsiao-chin has become a wanted woman after she failed to turn herself in to serve her two and a half year jail sentence.
The 41-year-old man had been charged and sentenced to prison in Taiwan for scamming customers online into buying counterfeit luxury items, such as Chanel handbags. She was briefly a singer who released two albums in 1999 and also known for having once dated Tony Sun of the boy band 5566.
Ting was supposed to start serving his sentence in jail on Wednesday morning (November 25), but he did not show up.
According to reports in the Taiwanese media, he had applied for a license. But the New Taipei District Attorney’s Office in Taiwan told reporters that the request was rejected because it did not follow proper protocol. As such, Ting is now a wanted criminal.
The news publication ETtoday tried to reach her via her mobile phone, but to no avail and she did not respond to text messages either. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
Ting’s problems have been well documented in the media. In 2015, he started selling luxury items such as bags, accessories and clothing on e-commerce platforms and claimed that they were authentic and purchased in Europe.
She had said she was looking for buyers urgently while moving.
[[nid:505777]]Several people took the bait and bought their items, only to discover after authenticating them that the items were fake. Some did not receive items for which they had paid.
Around 12 clients were duped by Ting and she scammed them out of around NT $ 170,000 (S $ 8,000).
She later said that she knew nothing about the scams as her e-commerce accounts were run by a friend from Singapore named Natasha.
Her defense was not accepted by the Taiwanese court and she was sentenced to three years and six months in jail.
On appeal, Ting expressed remorse for his actions and asked the court for clemency, which eventually handed down a sentence of two and a half years.
