SINGAPORE – After an elderly woman living alone was not seen outside her condo unit for months and letters began to pile up outside her door, the condo management was notified.
But his fate was only discovered more than a year later, on Monday (November 23), when police officers entered his apartment and found his remains.
The woman, believed to be Mrs. Lily Loh and in her 80s, was a resident of The Shore Residences, a condo on Amber Road near the Katong Mall.
Another resident, who did not want to be identified, told The Straits Times on Wednesday that Madame Loh lived alone and only had one dog for company.
He did not appear to have relatives or visitors, the resident added.
After returning from a trip abroad in January last year, the resident stopped seeing Madam Loh at the condo.
At one point in February, there was also a “strange smell” in the common hallway.
But it disappeared weeks later, after the resident returned from another trip abroad.
Later, mail began piling up in front of Madame Loh’s door, including court documents that appeared to have implicated her and the condo management.
Management was notified of Madame Loh’s disappearance, but nothing appeared to be done, the resident said.
It was not until the end of October this year that his missing status was transmitted to Mr. Lim Biow Chuan, who is a deputy for Mountbatten SMC.
Mr. Lim told ST that he in turn notified the police.
ST understands that the police officers came to the door of the unit in early November, but only entered the apartment on Monday, along with the condominium management staff, who called them that day.
Police said Tuesday: “Upon arrival of police, remains believed to be of a human and a dog were found inside a residential unit at 87 Amber Road. Preliminary investigations do not suspect a crime.”
In response to ST’s inquiries, the condo management said, “As we had some concerns regarding one of the residents who lived at The Shore earlier this week, we immediately alerted the police.”
He did not elaborate when asked why he had not acted earlier.
Investigations are still ongoing.
