SINGAPORE: For the fifth year in a row, 98.4% of sixth-grade primary school students who took the primary school completion exam (PSLE) reached secondary school.
A total of 39,995 candidates applied for the PSLE this year, of which 39,361 students were assessed as eligible to advance to high school, said the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). ) in a press release on Wednesday (Nov. 25).
Approximately two-thirds, or 66.3%, are eligible for the Express course, while 21.2% are eligible for the Normal (Academic) course and 11% for the Normal (Technical) course. These proportions are similar to last year’s 6th grade cohort, the MOE and SEAB said.
The 634 students who did not qualify for any of the three courses may choose to retake the PSLE next year.
With a recommendation from the elementary school principal, they can also apply to Assumption Pathway School or NorthLight School for “a more practical and experiential approach to learning,” the agencies said.

Last week, the MOE announced that PSLE candidates will receive their results in their classrooms rather than meeting as a cohort in the school hall as in previous years, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Candidates who collect their results at school must observe safe distancing measures and may be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Those who were unwell, or were under a quarantine order, a stay-at-home notice or a leave of absence, or who preferred not to collect their results in person, could view them online.

Parents will also receive instructions on Parents Gateway.
“If students are unable to report to their assigned high school on the first day of school in January 2021 due to valid reasons, they can contact the assigned high school directly to confirm that they are occupying the spot and the school will be able to reserve the spot for them, ”said the MOE and SEAB.
