Bruno Fernandes’ wonderful opening goal for Manchester United against Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night was described as’ Paul Scholes-esque ‘by the experts at BT Sport.

The Portuguese midfielder shot from the edge of the penalty area in the seventh minute at Old Trafford after being cleared for a corner, with Fernandes pushing straight into the upper corner of the net.

Fernandes scored another goal later in the first half when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team won 4-1 overall, with the 26-year-old delighted with his individual effort.

Speaking to BT Sport after the match, the United midfielder stated: ‘It was a really good goal, you have to be ready when you’re on the edge of the box to maybe stop the counterattack.

“This time I felt I needed to shoot, maybe next time I need to foul and get a yellow card.”

Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes was in the BT Sport studio covering the game, and experts Gary Lineker, Owen Hargreaves and Rio Ferdinand agreed it was a ‘Scholesy-style attack’.

Scholes admitted that he often occupied that position on the edge of the corner penalty area, while also having time to praise Fernandes’ overall display.

The 46-year-old said: ‘I loved that place, waiting for the ball to come and hoping there are no defenders and hoping nobody is on the edge of the box. What a first shot and it was a sensational goal.

He was the one who earned it from the start. He is their most creative player and will create every chance, even goals from midfield, everyone counts.

Fernandes almost had a chance to score a hat-trick in the first half of the Istanbul match when Manchester United received a penalty when Marcus Rashford was brought down.

The Portuguese midfielder, however, turned down the chance to take the penalty and instead handed the ball to Rashford, who dispatched his effort with ease.

In the second half, Istanbul withdrew a goal on a Deniz Turuc free-kick, but Daniel James sealed the points with a quick counterattack in the dying moments.

Earlier this month, Fernandes admitted that his style is very similar to Scholes’ after a goal-laden start to his career at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old has 21 goals in 35 United games across all competitions, but claims he looks more like Scholes than other former Red Devils midfielders in front of goal.

Fernandes told the United Podcast last week: ‘For me, maybe I’m closer to Paul Scholes. (He) was a guy who likes to be in the area, who likes to give an assist, who likes to score a lot of goals.

“I think Scholes was one of the best midfielders in the world. For England, a lot of people talk about Frank Lampard because he scored a lot of goals, of course one of the best in England too, you also have Steven Gerrard.

But I think Scholes is the one who makes the difference more than anyone. In the last generation, those three were the best three, and for me Scholes was the best. ‘
