Adorable robots make food deliveries for free at Nanyang Technological University, Digital News

Food delivery robots with cartoon faces appeared to have made the day for a student at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), who shared a clip of the roaming automata on Reddit.

The video, uploaded by u / penguinoni on Monday (Nov 23), showed wheeled robots rolling around campus, one of them stopping right in front of a canteen, presumably awaiting deployment.

Fun fact: if you order food at NTU, it is sent via robot from r / singapore

The small rovers are, in fact, Singapore’s first open-air delivery robots. Developed by a group of NTU students who manufacture and operate the robots under their startup Whiz, the droids are remotely operated to deliver food to hungry students across campus for free.

They had a little human help, of course. The Whiz staff will first collect and sort the orders before placing them inside the rovers and sending them on their merry way.

At this time, food delivery robots only operate within NTU. Whiz collaborates with startup Wecome Cates, a mobile food delivery app for canteen and restaurant orderpers on the university’s Yunnan campus.

According to Whiz, the robots have delivered more than 400 orders since the service entered beta testing in July. As the deliveries are non-contact, it has been shown to be a safer method of food delivery during the Covid-19 period.
