SINGAPORE – More than 12,000 jobs are offered in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, and most of them, about 95 percent, for professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMET) .
This is after some 7,190 people were placed in jobs, internships and training positions in the ICT sector between April and the beginning of this month under the SGUnited Jobs and Skills Package, the Ministry of Manpower said. (MOM) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA). in a work situation report on Tuesday (Nov 24).
About 2,160 of them found work, and around 85 percent of them in PMET positions. Another 5,030 people signed up for networking, internship and training opportunities.
This is by far the sector with the highest placements under SGUnited’s Jobs and Skills Package, Human Resources Minister Josephine Teo said at a press conference.
Currently available PMET jobs include roles as management and business consultants, with monthly salaries between $ 5,250 and $ 7,500. The median monthly salary is $ 6,500.
Meanwhile, the salary for software, web and multimedia developers is $ 4,500 to $ 7,500 a month, with a median of $ 6,000.
Sales, marketing, and business development managers can earn between $ 3,800 and $ 7,500, with a median of $ 5,500.
About 30 percent of the jobs offered are in “tech” positions, with the rest requiring a deeper level of tech skills. Tech-Lite roles, which may be suitable for applicants with no ICT experience or expertise, include customer success manager, digital marketing specialist and pre-sales consultant, MOM and IMDA said. These roles may be more attractive to mid-career people looking to switch careers to ICT.
There is strong demand for a workforce in functions such as digital marketing, software engineering and cybersecurity, as well as leaders to drive digital transformation in enterprises, the agencies added.
To meet this growing demand, the workforce needs to be trained and transformed.
Since 2015, more locals have taken jobs in the ICT sector: local employment has expanded by 17,000, representing 71 percent of the sector’s total employment of 190,200, MOM and IMDA said, adding that this it does not yet include the growth of ICT staff in other sectors of the economy.
To help locals access opportunities in this sector, the government and industry have implemented a three-pronged approach.
One way is by implementing placement and training programs for new hires and retraining existing staff. During the next three years, at least 5,500 job placement opportunities will be developed in companies.
Another approach is to offer company-hosted internships and attached programs, especially for those who may not have relevant experience. As of the beginning of this month, there are around 4,900 such opportunities available, in areas such as digital marketing, network engineering, cybersecurity, and cloud engineering.
In addition, efforts have been made in all institutes of higher education (DIH) to nurture and maintain an ever-growing talent pool. Admission to ICT courses and groups in IHL has increased by approximately 17% in the last three years, with entry of around 7,600 for the 2020 academic year alone.
For small and medium-sized businesses, there are also programs to address their talent needs. SMEs have participated in various professional retraining programs, representing almost 90 percent of placements between January and October this year.
While the pandemic has disrupted the economy and the labor market, it has also accelerated the adoption of digital technologies, leading to the creation of new roles and an increase in demand for ICT labor.
Some companies saw it as an opportunity to hire and train staff as they move into growth areas. Information technology company NCS, for example, hired more than 1,000 employees this year, of which 70% were mid-career people. Others, like tech giant IBM, will offer more training opportunities for job seekers.
