SINGAPORE: More than 12,000 information and communications technology (ICT) jobs are available under SGUnited’s Skills and Jobs Package to help drive a growing digital economy, said the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) in his latest employment status report on Tuesday (Nov 24). .
Since 2015, 17,000 locals have joined the industry and, as of June this year, they represent 71 percent of the 190,200 workers in the sector.
These are people in subsectors such as telecommunications services and software providers, but do not include technology workers from other parts of the economy.
Between April and early November this year, more than 7,000 job seekers were placed in jobs, internships, adjuncts, and training programs, making the ICT industry the sector with the highest placements under the SGUnited initiative so far.
“While COVID-19 has disrupted the economy and the labor market, it has also accelerated the adoption of digital technologies, leading to the creation of new jobs and increased demand for labor in ICT.” said MOM.
A total of 2,160 people obtained jobs, of which 1,830 were professional, managerial, executive and technical (PMET) positions, while 1,970 people were placed in internships and assistants, and 3,060 people were placed in training programs.

COMPANIES STILL HIRING
There are still about 12,000 jobs available in the sector, MOM said, adding that about 95 percent of them are PMET positions, such as software developers and network engineers.
However, only about 30 percent of the 12,000 positions are “tech-lite” positions, jobs that do not require experience or technical knowledge. These are roles such as digital marketers and pre-sales consultants, which MOM says can “attract more” to job seekers mid-career.
The remaining positions would require a deeper level of technology skills, the ministry said.

The salary for the jobs ranges between S $ 3,750 and S $ 6,000 for computer technicians, and between S $ 5,250 and S $ 7,500 for management and business consultants.
To expand the sector’s workforce, MOM said the government will roll out at least 5,500 more job placement opportunities over the next three years.
He is also encouraging people to take on attachment and internship vacancies in the technology sector, noting that there are still around 4,900 openings available in areas such as cybersecurity and UI / UX development.
In education, admission to technology courses at Institutes of Higher Education has increased 17 percent in the past three years, with an intake of around 7,600 for the 2020 academic year.
This will help Singapore “maintain a constantly growing pipeline of quality talent in our workforce,” said MOM.
Over the next three years, there will also be 750 additional positions in Professional Conversion Programs (PCP) to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) train existing workers and address their workforce needs as part of the digitization of your business operations. .
