SINGAPORE – Four people, ages 15 to 21, are being investigated for their alleged involvement in a fraud case involving about $ 12,200, police said on Monday (November 23).
It comes after a report was made on November 15 at midnight about two unknown people on a dating website with whom the victim had become friends.
Both allegedly said that in exchange for company, the victim had to transfer cash to them on several occasions, to pay for the repair costs that he allegedly incurred in a traffic accident.
Officers from the Bedok Police Division later established the identities of four individuals involved in the alleged internet love scam on November 16.
Those convicted of cheating can be imprisoned for up to 10 years and fined.
In their statement, the police said that Internet love scams remain a serious crime problem.
They reminded the public to be careful when making friends with strangers online to avoid falling for these types of scams.
Members of the public must also exercise caution when asked to receive or transfer money to people they do not know, police said.
