Turning a blind eye to the law: Execution officer suspended after smoking and littering in Woodlands, Singapore News

Oh, how the tables have turned.

A Certis Cisco compliance officer was suspended after he was spotted smoking on an empty deck and casually throwing his butt aside on Saturday (November 21), shortly after he tried to prevent a pair of delivery men from stopping at the Woodlands Avenue loading and unloading dock 6.

Videos of his actions were uploaded to Facebook that same night by one of the affected passengers along with the caption: “Enforce the law. Violate the law.”

In the first clip, the officer was seen calmly telling the delivery man behind the camera that he was not allowed to park where he was, despite the latter noting that he had parked his vehicle at the loading and unloading dock.

Another passenger approached with a similar complaint, saying the officer had also written down his license plate number.

The officer maintained his stance, telling them, “The cargo bay is not allowed for delivery. You have to go to the parking lot. And I didn’t tell you that you can’t deliver. I gave you five minutes.”

“So why did you write down my number?” the other messenger bit himself.

The couple finally gave up.

Little did the deliveryman expect to see the officer again a while later, although at a considerable distance.

The officer had donned a regular shirt over his uniform and was openly smoking on the empty deck before getting up and tossing the still lit cigarette into the path outside.

In response to inquiries from AsiaOne, Certis said the compliance officer received a warning letter and was suspended from all duties. The incident has also been reported to the relevant authorities for further action.

“We are disappointed to learn of an incident that occurred on November 21, 2020. Our police officer was filmed smoking and improperly disposing of the cigarette butt on Woodlands Avenue 6.”

They added: “Certis expects the highest standards of discipline from our officers and they are required to fully comply with these standards and observe the law at all times.”

According to the National Development Ministry, the loading and unloading bays provided in the HDB blocks are designed for fast loading and unloading activities, including the delivery and collection of food orders by delivery passengers.

Smoking on the empty deck is also prohibited and carries a composition fee of $ 200, or up to $ 1,000 if convicted in court.
