Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes disagreed on whether it was clear that a West Brom penalty should have been overturned against Manchester United on Saturday night.
After a low-key first half, the game came to life shortly after the break when David Coote determined that Bruno Fernandes fouled West Brom’s Conor Gallagher in the penalty area.
However, after being told to review the decision on the court monitor, Coote chose to override the decision due to the fact that Fernandes had made some contact with the ball.
United earned their own penalty minutes later, which Fernandes dispatched on the second attempt after a restart was ordered.

Speaking on BT Sport after the game, former Reds defender Ferdinand criticized Coote’s decision to overturn his decision to award West Brom a penalty minutes earlier.
He said: “It’s a shameful decision, he got it right the first time. He went there, looked at him, how does it go against the decision he made initially when you look at her closely?
“The more you look at it, the more it is a penalty.”
He added: “It’s plain and simple to watch. You have to look at it from West Brom’s point of view as well, they’ve come here and they’ve been strict, they’ve stuck to their game plan and they’ve been solid.
“They (West Brom) are looking for little opportunities in a game like that, they get one and take it away.
“It’s unbelievable. If it was a decision where you had to go to the VAR because you really couldn’t see it or you didn’t understand if it was the right decision, but that was very clear. That’s not what VAR is for.”
Scholes, however, argued that the decision was not as clear cut as Ferdinand was saying.
“I’ve seen it about 50 times, I still can’t make up my mind,” he said. “I know it looks like a bit of a shin on the shin, but it seems like he touches the ball a bit too.
“From another angle, you can see Bruno’s reaction to go and complain to the referee right away saying that he never fouled him.
“We would all do that, of course, but I don’t think it’s totally conclusive … I’m not sure it’s that clear.”
