A man, who claimed to have been fired to mislead authorities into handing him Covid-19 relief funds, has been jailed.
Chow Jia Chuan, 29, tried a second time after she managed to trick the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) into giving her $ 500 the first time.
Yesterday he was jailed for five months after pleading guilty to one count of cheating and two counts of attempted cheating.
In April, Chow, then a business development executive, told his supervisor that he wanted to quit because he didn’t like the job and had interpersonal problems with a colleague.
Before his last day of work, Chow agreed to the request for the Temporary Relief Fund (TRF) and dishonestly stated that he had lost his job due to the pandemic.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT SCHEME
The TRF is a financial support scheme launched by the Government to help those whose jobs have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

He tried his luck again in May when he applied for the Covid-19 Support Grant (CSG), and once again lied saying he had lost his job due to the pandemic.
While processing his application, an MSF officer asked Chow for supporting documents, such as a letter of termination or downsizing.
Assistant District Attorney Jeremy Bin said Chow forged a spending cut letter.
To make it look legitimate, you copied the signature block from your previous company’s HR business partner and inserted it at the bottom of the letter.
But his lie was exposed when the MSF officer contacted the business partner and rejected his request.
But Chow reapplied for the CSG and attached the same falsified expense reduction letter.
Then the MSF officer submitted a police report.
In July, Chow repaid the $ 500 TRF grant.
