Teen admits to causing severe pain, leaving police officer with spinal cord injury and bite wounds

SINGAPORE – A teenage drug addict struggled during his arrest, causing serious injuries and leaving a police officer with a spinal cord injury and superficial bite wounds.

The victim, a full-time National Serviceman (NSF), felt numbness on the left side of his body.

The upper and lower extremities on the left side of his body had weakened and had no reflexes, Deputy Prosecutor Tan Hsiao Tien said.

NSF received 30 days of inpatient leave and has since made a full recovery.

The 17-year-old shooter pleaded guilty in district court on Thursday (November 19) to one count of causing serious harm to a public official and using methamphetamine.

It cannot be named because adolescents under the age of 18 are covered by the Children and Youth Act.

The DPP said that the NSF and its colleague were conducting a foot patrol in Block 90 Redhill Close around 2 p.m. on Aug. 5 when they entered an elevator on the seventh floor.

The teenager and his cousin were also inside the elevator. The court heard that they appeared nervous and had bloodshot eyes.

The cousin was holding a small brown box and a check revealed that it contained drug-taking utensils. The police officers later arrested the couple.

While the victim’s colleague searched the cousin downstairs, the defendant tried to flee.

DPP Tan said: “The victim, who was standing next to the defendant, managed to grab the defendant from behind and pin him to the ground. A fight ensued … The victim ordered the defendant to stop fighting, but did not He did, comply and again tried to flee.

“The victim managed to pull the defendant down. During the struggle, the defendant managed to remove one of his hands from the handcuffs. The defendant also bit the victim on his left arm and left breast in an attempt to escape from custody.”

Police reinforcements arrived at the scene shortly after and the attacker was arrested. He was referred to the Central Narcotics Office and his urine samples were found to contain traces of methamphetamine. Investigations revealed that he had used the drug on August 4.

On Thursday, the court requested reports to assess his suitability for reformative training and probation.

Offenders who receive reformative training will be detained in a facility and forced to follow a strict regimen that includes foot drills and counseling.

He will be sentenced on November 26.

For causing serious harm to a public servant, a criminal can be imprisoned for up to 15 years and fined or punished.
