SINGAPORE – Growing up in a three-bedroom apartment in Bedok North, life was not always easy for Mohamed Faizal Mohamed Abdul Kadir, as his parents’ finances were difficult.

But her parents, a housewife and a taxi driver, did everything they could to give back despite their own circumstances.

On the one hand, they provided home-cooked food for mosques, which is what has inspired the 40-year-old Faizal to always do the same, even as he now serves as deputy chief prosecutor and chief state attorney at the Attorney General’s Office.

On Wednesday (November 18), Mr. Faizal received the Berita Harian Anugerah Jauhari Award, or Best Win of the Year Award, from the Minister of Law and Home Affairs K. Shanmugam for his outstanding achievements in the legal profession, as well as for their contributions to community causes. .

He was appointed Senior Councilor earlier this year, and is the first Malay-Muslim to receive the title.

The BH award is just the latest accolade Mr. Faizal has received. In 2015, he won the President’s Award for Youth and was also listed as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2016.

In the three years since then, he was named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world, a list compiled by the Royal Center for Islamic Strategic Studies in Jordan.

Despite his many accomplishments, Mr. Faizal has a humble figure and attributes his success to the contributions of others in addition to hard work.

“My journey and my career story is not just mine. It is the story of love, hard work, support, mentoring and guidance from so many around me, both personally and professionally,” said Mr. Faizal.

He currently funds scholarship programs at his alma mater, Bedok View Secondary School and Tampines Junior College, where he supports the studies of needy students who show promise and have performed well academically.

He has also contributed to the Mendaki community self-help group since 2005, by participating in their Young Mendaki Club, which provides Malaysian-Muslim high school students with opportunities to hone their leadership and social skills, as well as structured workshops that help them become well-trained individuals.

Berita Harian’s editor, Mohd Saat Abdul Rahman, said: “With a humble background, his achievements make him an excellent role model, not only for the Malay-Muslim community but also for all Singaporeans.”

The Malay Language Newspaper’s Annual Award, which started in 1998, is awarded annually to outstanding Malaysian Muslims for their achievements in various fields.

The award was last presented to Imam Syed Hassan Mohamed Al-Attas, director of the Ba’alwie Mosque on Lewis Road, in recognition of his contributions to interfaith work. President Halimah Yacob and Master Potter Iskandar Jalil are among the previous winners of the award, now in their 22nd year.

On Wednesday, Berita Harian also presented the Young Achiever of the Year award to the national team footballer, Mr. Ikhsan Fandi, 21, who currently plays for Norway’s First Division Jerv.

Speaking at a press conference after the awards ceremony, his father, local soccer legend Fandi Ahmad, thanked the organizers for the award and said his son did not expect to receive it.

“He was surprised because he didn’t know anything about this award. We, as footballers, never thought of getting any awards, we just played, we worked hard and we played for our team and for our country,” he said.
