LONDON (REUTERS) – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson isolates himself after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19, a further setback after infighting among his top advisers sank Downing Street in chaos last week.
Johnson, who was admitted to the hospital with the novel coronavirus earlier this year, is doing well and has no symptoms, a spokesman for the prime minister said on Sunday (Nov 15).
“He will continue to work from Downing Street, including leading the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic,” the spokesman said. “The prime minister will follow the rules and isolate himself.”
Johnson met with a group of lawmakers in Downing Street on Thursday that included Lee Anderson, a member of the Conservative Party who subsequently developed symptoms for Covid-19 and tested positive.
The British leader hoped to retake the initiative after last week’s Downing Street drama.
Johnson’s office said Friday that Dominic Cummings, the prime minister’s most powerful adviser and a fellow veteran of the Brexit referendum, will stop working for him next month.
Negotiations with Brussels on a post-Brexit trade deal are reaching a climax ahead of the December 31 expiration of Britain’s transition period with the European Union.
Johnson also has to decide his next step regarding coronavirus restrictions in England after he ordered a four-week lockdown that will end on December 2.
