Journalist Duncan Castles warned Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about what he claims to be the true nature of Ed Woodward’s latest statement.
United Executive Vice President Woodward said felt “absolutely committed” to the progress of Solskajer on Thursday.
Woodward spoke amid the release of the club’s latest accounts. But the comments came after recent pressure on Solskjaer’s future. and links to Mauricio Pochettino.
United had reportedly sounded like Pochettino after two losses in a row, including the 2-1 loss to Istanbul Basaksehir. However, Solskjaer eased the speculation with a 3-1 win at Everton before the international break.
However, Castles cautioned that Woodward could still hang Solskjaer to dry if the results turn sour.
Castles asked at the Transfer Window Podcast: “What did Woodward really say?
“He said ‘on the field, while there is still a lot of work ahead of us to achieve absolute consistency, we remain absolutely committed to the positive path we are on with Ole as the team continues to develop.’
“Yes, you can read that as if he was absolutely committed to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
“But you can also read it as they are absolutely committed to the positive path that they are on, and you can almost put ‘under Ole’ in parentheses.
“It is not ‘we are absolutely committed to Solskjaer as a coach’, it is being absolutely committed to what they describe as a positive path.”
Solskjaer could still face dismissal
Castles went on to caution that, despite Woodward’s assurances, the boardroom chief will have no qualms about firing the Norwegian.
“My guess is that what [Woodward] I wanted the message to be perceived as a message of support for Solskjaer, ”Castles said.
“Although, if Solskjaer is eliminated and the results reach a stage where they decide they need a change and act on the communications they have had with the people of Mauricio Pochettino, they could go back and say ‘well, we did not’ Actually, I’m not saying that, that commitment was on the positive path.
“‘We decided that the positive path had deviated, therefore we had to deviate from Solskjaer.”
