SINGAPORE – The third and final man linked to an Ang Mo Kio jewelry theft last year was sentenced on Friday (November 13) to 27 months in jail and a $ 20,000 fine.

Sharavindran Suppiah, 32, had previously pleaded guilty to four counts of dishonest receipt of stolen property, which also involved items taken in the theft.

He also admitted to seven other unrelated crimes, including assault and driving a car on August 13 last year, although he did not have a license to do so.

On Friday, he was disqualified from driving all types of vehicles for six months. You will have to spend two more months behind bars if you cannot pay the fine.

The mastermind of the theft, 28-year-old M. Jegatheesh, was sentenced Thursday to three years and three months in prison and six strokes of the cane.

Veeramani Subran Das, 37, who was driving the getaway car, was sentenced to three years in jail and six strokes of the baton on November 2. All three men are Singaporean.

Deputy Prosecutors Thiagesh Sukumaran and Jeremy Bin told the court that Jegatheesh met with the other two in Geylang at around 9 p.m. on August 13 last year to plan the heist.

The next day, Veeramani met Jegatheesh in a car in a parking lot near Block 521 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5 at around 2:40 p.m.

Jegatheesh went alone to the Hock Cheong Jade and Jewelery store, which is located in the 574 block of Ang Mo Kio 10 avenue, and committed the robbery.

He filled a duffel bag with valuables worth nearly $ 120,000 in total and collided with a car driven by Veeramani. Then the two men left the scene.

When they reached the same parking lot in Ang Mo Kio, Veeramani took the duffel bag and they parted ways.

Later that day, Veeramani met Sharavindran, who inspected the contents of the bag.

Sharavindran contacted a man and asked him to arrange for someone to buy the jewelry.

DPPs said: “Jegatheesh ordered Sharavindran to keep the jewels in a place known to Jegatheesh while they figured out how to unload them.”

“He directed Veeramani to drive to Dakota Crescent, where he knew there were abandoned blocks of Housing Board housing.”

While Veeramani waited, Sharavindran carried a bag containing the valuables to the sixth floor of a block. He placed the bag in a toilet cistern and the two men left the scene.

But the three criminals were arrested and the loot was recovered.

In an unrelated case, the court heard that Sharavindran had worked with three other men and a woman to receive stolen checks in 2017.

He also assaulted a 47-year-old man in Geylang in July 2017 following a dispute, an attack that left the victim with injuries, including broken ribs.

For each count of receiving stolen property, a criminal can be jailed for up to five years and fined.
