The ‘humorous’ way in which members of the Man Utd playing team blatantly tried to lure Jack Grealish to Old Trafford in the summer window has been revealed.
The Red Devils spent most of the last transfer period chasing the signature of England sensation Jadon sancho.
His search ultimately ended in failure, with his backup option long-rumored. Grealish He also stayed at his current club.
A fee rumored in the region of £ 80 million had been touted as necessary to secure his departure from Villa Park.
No such offer materializedHowever, Grealish reaffirmed his loyalty to his childhood club when he put pen to paper on a new contract in mid-September.
Now according to Athletic David Ornstein, several Manchester United players allegedly tried to lure Grealish into the club during a preseason friendly between the two sides.
Ornstein first said about Grealish’s summer speculation about the Tifo Podcast’s Ask Ornstein Program (via The express): “I think many of us would have anticipated that Grealish would be the subject of a high-profile move in the transfer window. But you have to consider the impact COVID had on the market.
“It meant that few clubs were willing to pay Villa’s sale price for Grealish. Villa did not need or want to sell, they have very rich owners and he is their captain.
“Plus, I think some of those clubs still had reservations about that level of spending on this player and if he’s the real deal, he’s starting to look like he is.
“I think Villa would have been sympathetic to the situation if a suitable offer had come through. I think Grealish would have looked to explore if a Champions League club came in and put their money in his mouth and showed him that he was their number one target. That did not happen.
“Manchester United were very linked. They prioritized Jadon Sancho and didn’t even catch him. I’ve been told that Manchester City really look up to Grealish, but it wasn’t on their agenda this particular summer. I’m not sure about the others. “
Man Utd ‘tactic’ revealed
Ornstein then went on to reveal details of the brazen efforts of the Man Utd players to lure Grealish to Old Trafford.
He continued: “Curiously there was a friendly between Villa and Man United before the start of the new season. I think, in a humorous way, several United players were saying to Grealish: “When are you joining us?”
“But there was nothing from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer towards him. I think at that point, Grealish was pretty clear that it wasn’t going to happen.
“He wanted his future to be settled before the season started and at that moment he indicated that he wanted to sign a new contract so all the parties came together very quickly and in the early morning of Tuesday, September 15, that contract was signed.
“We don’t know if there is a release clause, we will have to wait and see. We also don’t know if there is some kind of agreement on whether a certain club level replaces him with a certain pay level and that could drive him away.
“What we do know is that he seems completely committed and happy at Aston Villa.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona reportedly want a January deal for the ‘most outstanding player’ in Man Utd’s under-23 squad.
