Tourism Malaysia encourages people to vacation in Singapore (but Bilahari Kausikan is skeptical), Digital News

With a bit of cross-border love, Tourism Malaysia saluted its Singaporean counterpart in a show of solidarity during a time when the tourism sectors in both countries are taking a brutal beating from the impact of Covid-19.

In a post on its Facebook page on Wednesday (November 11), Tourism Malaysia surprised everyone by promoting tourism in Singapore.

“Take a Singapoliday,” the organization raved about, taking a page from Burger King’s recent ad asking fans to order from competing fast food chains to support businesses affected by the pandemic.

Indeed, business on both sides of the border has been severely affected by a lack of inbound travelers, and Tourism Malaysia knows that the Singapore Tourism Board’s (STB) #SingapoRediscovers national holiday campaign could need a boost from signal.

“We never would have imagined encouraging you to vacation in Singapore, but our friends in the tourism industry could use their support at this time,” Tourism Malaysia wrote. “Although we dream of sunbathing in Pulau Redang, Sentosa is just as good for now.”

The post was warmly received by Singaporeans and of course the Singapore Tourism Board who responded enthusiastically.

However, there were some doubts and retired diplomat Bilahari Kausikan tried to report him for some reason. The former ambassador general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not believe that the publication was real.

People pointed out that it totally is.

The former top diplomat, who was recently accused of acting as an “agent” for a foreign power, was later corrected, but still expressed some skepticism.

Since then, the Tourism Malaysia post has been edited and replaced by a simple string of emojis showing Malaysia’s love for Singapore.
