SINGAPORE – A girl’s mother and stepfather were charged on Thursday (November 12) with the murder of the 11-year-old girl.

The couple, who are 26 years old and cannot be identified due to a gag order, appeared in district court via video link, where they were charged with murder with common intent.

Court documents show that the couple allegedly caused the death of the girl, who is the woman’s biological daughter, between November 6 and 10 this year in an apartment in Jurong.

In court on Thursday, the woman asked to see her three children and said she has joint custody of two of them with her ex-husband. As one of her sons will be starting Primary 1 soon, she requested bail so she could pass some relevant documents to her ex-husband.

The defendant also requested to see his son through a video link.

The district judge told them there was no bond available, but said the investigating officer could help with their requests.

Marriage records show that the couple got married in April this year. The woman’s first marriage was in 2013.

The girl was unconscious when she was taken by ambulance to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital on Tuesday around 11 am, according to police. She was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m.

Police said they were alerted to the unnatural death around 1:20 p.m. Following investigations, the couple were arrested for their alleged involvement.

The couple are currently in pretrial detention and will return to court on November 19.

If convicted of the murder charge, the couple faces the death penalty.
