The Pasir Ris-Punggol City Council has stepped up cleanup efforts at Block 470 Pasir Ris Drive 6 after a resident shared his comments about the large number of birds flocking to the area.

Stomper Anonymous, who resides on the block, shared his concerns about the issue on Oct. 28 and sent photos of the birds to Stomp.

In the photos, birds can be seen perched on the ledge and their droppings can be seen all over the foot of the block.

“This block and the surrounding blocks have been plagued with this bird problem since October 2019. It is a nuisance,” Stomper said.

“I’m freaking out because these birds are coming into my house! The other day, I also noticed that they were perched on my balcony ledge.

“The birds also leave their droppings all over the farm, and it’s quite frustrating.”

Stomper added that he has informed Pasir Ris-Punggol City Council and the National Parks Board (NParks) on this issue.

In response to a query from Stomp, a Pasir Ris Punggol City Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of reader feedback and have been working closely with the relevant agency and resident to address this bird-caused issue. migratory “.

The spokesperson added that since then the city council has increased its cleaning frequencies to keep the farm clean.

“The City Council is aware of this situation and will continue to work with the corresponding agency to explore options to manage the issue,” said the spokesman.

“We would like to take this opportunity to remind residents to keep the environment clean by refraining from feeding the birds to mitigate the growth of the bird population.”

According to NParks, pigeons are common in Singapore and can be a problem because their droppings stain houses and public services.

NParks added in an advisory that pigeons “can also transmit disease to humans through contaminated droppings or through contact with sick birds.”

Here are some tips from NParks that you can keep in mind:

  1. Properly cover all open garbage containers in your facility to prevent pigeons from reaching food waste.
  2. Do not feed the pigeons and people discourage people from feeding the pigeons. Feeding pigeons is a crime that carries a fine of up to $ 500. Individuals who dump food from their Housing and Development Board (HDB) unit can also be prosecuted for littering skyscrapers.
  3. Prevent pigeons from perching and nesting by installing spikes or other bird-proofing measures.
