SINGAPORE – A young man broke into a dormitory at the National University of Singapore (NUS) eight times over the course of about six weeks because he wanted to wear women’s underwear.
Goh An Soon, now 20, who was not a NUS student at the time of the crimes, pleaded guilty on Monday (November 9) to one count of lingerie misappropriation and burglary.
Assistant District Attorney Tan Pei Wei said Goh would go to the bedroom at King Edward VII Hall on Kent Ridge Road whenever he felt the need to look at the underwear. He did it between December 19, 2018 and February 1 of last year.
She checked the washers in the bedroom laundry areas, or went through the clothes hanging to dry in the common hall to look for unattended lingerie.
The DPP added: “He stated that he would then take the underwear to the pantry rooms in neighboring campus blocks to look closely at them, and that he left the underwear in these rooms thereafter.
But according to court documents, she took more than women’s underwear.
For example, on January 16 of last year, she took five laundry bags containing items that included a pair of socks, two towels, and a pair of men’s underwear.
The following month, he took out a wallet that contained items such as bank cards and a USB stick.
Most of these items were recovered.
At around 6 p.m. on February 1 of last year, a member of the NUS ward staff spotted Goh behaving suspiciously in the bedroom.
Goh was confronted in a pantry and the employee alerted a campus security investigation officer.
The security officer called the police at 7.12 pm that day, the court heard.
On Monday, District Judge May Mesenas requested a report to assess Goh’s eligibility for parole.
He will be sentenced on December 21.
For the misappropriation of items belonging to others, a criminal can be imprisoned for up to two years and fined.
