A 58-year-old woman was taken to hospital after a man allegedly hit her head with a metal cup.

The incident happened at Golden Mile Food Center around 5.30pm on Saturday.

Police said they were alerted to a case of reckless act that caused injuries. A 50-year-old man was arrested and the woman was taken to Raffles Hospital. Police investigations are ongoing.

Speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the victim, who wanted to be known only as Ms. Ho, said that she has a stall at the street vendor center with her brothers.

She said the man had approached her booth and asked for two toothpicks, which she agreed to give him.

Seeing that he couldn’t get the toothpick out of its holder, she told him that he could pour it instead.

But the man suddenly exploded.

She recounted: “He hit the table and yelled that he knew (how to do it), and then he started throwing vulgarities.”

Scared, she told the man to stop, but he became even more agitated.

Ms. Ho said the man walked away, turned several times, and cursed while pointing at her.

Then he took a metal mug on the table and hit him on the head with it twice.

Several diners came to his aid and someone immediately called the police.

A nearby food vendor, who wanted to be known only as Mr. Chen, said that some of those who came to his aid were Certis Cisco officers who were in the area during his break.

About seven of them ran towards the man and prevented him from leaving.

Chen, 31, said: “These officers generally patrol the area and come here to eat during their breaks.”

When the officers told the man not to leave, he did not resist and sat quietly to wait for the police.

Ms. Ho said she was not injured.

It is the first time he has seen the man, but a patron who did not want to be identified said he had seen him several times.

He said the man used to loiter at the street vendor center alone and often mutter to himself.
