A suspect was shot in the abdomen after he attacked a police officer and refused to stop despite being warned by another officer who drew his revolver.
Instead, the man ran to the other officer and grabbed his gun. He was shot in the ensuing fight, but continued to fight the officer for his revolver.
Backup officers eventually subdued the 36-year-old suspect, who was taken to hospital where he is in stable condition.
He has been arrested for willfully causing harm to dissuade a public servant from doing his duty, as well as for cheating and alleged drug-related offenses.
It has also been linked to incidents of illegal assembly and illegal activities related to Customs, police said yesterday.
Three plainclothes officers, armed with revolvers and handcuffs, had raided an apartment in the City Suites condominium on Balestier Road around 1 a.m. yesterday to arrest four suspects linked to a series of cheating cases.
When they entered the unit, the man lunged and attacked one of them repeatedly, causing him to fall to the ground and bleed from his face.
When a second man began to move towards the first officer, his colleague drew his revolver in an attempt to prevent him from joining the assault.
After the 36-year-old man attacked the officer with the revolver, the second man assaulted the first officer, police said. Both officers were injured, the first with arm and face injuries, while his colleague had injuries to his hands and lips.
Police said the second man, 22, was also arrested for willfully causing harm to dissuade a public servant from doing his duty.
Two women from the flat, aged 33 and 23, allegedly girlfriends of the men, were arrested for cheating and allegedly using controlled drugs.
Police seized $ 20,000 of alleged criminal proceeds, drugs, and drug-related paraphernalia. The Central Narcotics Office is investigating the alleged drug-related crimes.
Three other suspects, two men ages 32 and 18 and an 18-year-old woman, were previously arrested in connection with the cheating cases.
The seven are suspected of using other people’s data and stolen credit card data to buy mobile phones from a telecommunications company and resell them.
At a press conference at the Tanglin Police Division yesterday, its commander Cheong Chee Ming said that initial investigations show that the use of force was proportional to the threat perceived by the officer.
“Police officers work in dynamic environments,” he said, adding that they face risks on a daily basis and need to “react to situations as they unfold.”
