In what appeared to be a sign of an apocalypse (we’re guessing it’s just another day in 2020), the skies over the Central Business District were engulfed in dark, foreboding clouds like waves that threatened to rain death and destruction on Monday (2 of November). ).

But in reality, they are just platform clouds, one of the most alarming and amazing weather phenomena in nature.

“The formation of the platform cloud on November 2, 2020 was due to the strong daytime warming of land areas along with the convergence of winds over Singapore and its surroundings,” the Singapore Meteorological Service (MSS) told AsiaOne, clarifying that it was not directly associated with Super Typhoon Goni, which devastated parts of the Philippines on Sunday (November 1).

The ominous clouds were seen by people in central Singapore, who couldn’t help but record the show and share photos and videos on social media.

MSS explained that the fearsome cloud formation is an arcus cumulonimbus cloud, or commonly known as a platform cloud.

“These clouds are sometimes seen in Singapore during a heavy storm,” MSS noted.

“They typically form along the leading edge or gust front of the cumulonimbus cloud (high, dense convective clouds that give rise to thunderstorms), when the surrounding warm, humid air rises and condensation occurs. , creating the ragged edges of the cloud. “

MSS also expects the first half of November 2020 to see short-lived, moderate to heavy stormy rains, with frequent lightning strikes over parts of the island between the afternoon and evening on most days. However, in the few days when it does not rain, the temperature could rise to a scorching 35 ° C.
