SINGAPORE – This year there will be no fireworks at the New Year’s Eve countdown celebration in Marina Bay to minimize crowds in the area amid the pandemic.
Instead, fireworks will go off at different locations in the heart of Singapore, as in previous years, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said on Thursday (Nov 5), adding that agencies are still working on the details.
This is the first time that Marina Bay’s New Years Eve countdown celebration will be marked without fireworks since the annual tradition began in 2005.
“As health and safety remain a priority, we have adopted a different format to ensure that the public can celebrate in a safe and meaningful way,” said URA CEO Lim Eng Hwee.
In lieu of fireworks, there will be two light shows at Marina Bay in December.
The first will feature student artwork from various institutions projected onto the facades of three landmarks in Marina Bay: The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, ArtScience Museum and Merlion.
Organized in partnership with the National Center for Volunteers and Philanthropy, these landmarks will be illuminated every night from December 25-31, representing times this year when people came together to help the vulnerable in the community.
The second screen comprises an illumination of the Marina Bay skyline for the month of December, with 60 beams of light shining from The Promontory.
“The exhibit represents a guiding beacon that underpins the spirit of Singaporeans to navigate through the pandemic and the determination to emerge stronger in the new year together as a nation,” said URA.
There will also be a New Year’s Eve music program produced by Mediacorp, featuring local and international artists from the music, dance and fashion community.
The musical program, which will incorporate scenes of the heart fireworks and the lights of Marina Bay, will air on Channel 5 and will be streamed online.
Last year, in addition to an eight-minute fireworks display in Marina Bay, countdown parties were held in the heart of the Housing Board, including Tampines, Punggol and the Yishun-Khatib area.
