SINGAPORE – Liew Mun Leong’s son has been investigated by police for criminal offenses, including for lying under oath in connection with the case of his former family maid, the Minister of Law and Affairs said on Wednesday (November 4). Inmates, K Shanmugam.
A statement on Karl Liew’s actions will be issued on Wednesday evening, Shanmugam revealed while delivering the ministerial statement on Parti Liyani’s case in Parliament.
While testifying at Parti’s trial in state courts after the maid was accused of stealing from her family, Karl Liew claimed that he possessed a few items, including a Gucci wallet and a Braun Buffel wallet that had been found among the items that Parti intended to send home. . Among the other items found, he claimed that a Helix watch was a gift from his father and that he had bought a pink knife before 2002. He also claimed to have bought a sheet in the UK.
However, the High Court did not believe Karl Liew’s evidence on these elements during the appeal stage. His father denied having the Helix watch, and it was determined that the pink knife was probably made after 2002. Karl Liew’s wife denied ever seeing the sheet in her room or on her bed, and the sheet had the same pattern as a duvet cover with an IKEA Label.
When asked about certain women’s clothing allegedly stolen by Parti, Karl Liew also claimed that they belonged to him and that he sometimes wore women’s shirts.
He also claimed that a damaged Gerald Genta watch was valued at $ 25,000 even though its strap was broken and a button was missing. Later, a defense witness valued the watch at $ 500 due to its defects.
On Karl Liew’s evidence, Shanmugam noted that the High Court had found his claims suspicious, as no family member remembered giving him the wallets.
Although the state courts decided to accept some parts of Karl Liew’s evidence during the trial, the Superior Court considered Karl Liew an unreliable witness and dismissed his evidence.
Since then, statements have been taken from Karl Liew about whether these items had been in his possession and about his inconsistent positions on these items.
Because of the case, AGC has decided to “seriously consider” follow-up investigations if the ruling or a court decision issued indicates that there may have been perjury or other serious crimes, Shanmugam said.
